EMIGRATION TO U.S.A.:
Thijs apparently met his wife Anna Maria Tromp while on his way to America. He had to spend the night in the inn of Anna's father because of a delay of the sailing to America. There, in Santpoort, he fell in love with Anna and gave up on his emigration plans.
In 1878, shortly after they got married, he and his family left for the province of Overijssel in search of employment. Later on they moved back to the western parts of the Netherlands and settled in Amsterdam.

CONCISED BIOGRAPHY Because of their opposition to Dutch rule, Sultan Ahmad, Tengkoe Adil and Tengkoe Pengiran Besar Muda were expelled to other
parts of the Dutch East Indies by the Governor-General on February 11, 1859. The first two to the Riouw Islands, and Tengkoe
Pengiran Besar Muda to Ambon.
Eventually, Tengkoe Adil ended up in Bogor where he met Saria, his future 4th wife. In 1886 the expulsion was lifted, and they all
returned to Asahan.
Since Sultan Ahmad Shah had no male or female descendants, Tengkoe Adil's eldest son Tengkoe Ngah Tandjong (alias Husin Shah)
became the next sultan.
