During World War I, Pilip served in the Ukrainian army. His war experiences strongly contributed to his strong aversion to religion.
Before he married, Pilip already owned land where he planted fruit trees and built a house.
Around 1933 he was taken prisoner by the Communist regime for being opposed to their farmland policies and sentenced, without trial, to 3 years hard labour.
Shortly before he was to be released in 1936, he was executed by live burial near Krementcug, Ukraine, eyewitnessed by a cousin, living in that town.
In that period millions of other Ukrainians were murdered by the Stalinist communists.
